Toys Of Ancient Gods play with time and space. Travel
around the world, taste the past, try the most deserved cultural miracles
and it makes you dance. Their first record titled "Stones Are Talking"
was produced in 1993 using elements from javanese gamelan music resulting
in a unique dance-fusion style. Many artists tried to use world music in
their productions, but Toys Of Ancient Gods differ from others,
because they use a very strong concept based on Erich von Däniken's
and AAS' (Ancient Astronaut Society) views about the World. Those
concepts initiated the whole production and led to the main idea of the
second album as well.
As you surely know, Mr. von Däniken and AAS think,
that some thousand years ago astronauts visited Earth, and their visit
changed history and the development of Humanity. Mr von Däniken and AAS
constantly seek the evidence to prove their theory, and they succeed in
finding some strange sculptures, buildings, traditional scripts, material
legacies, legends, tales, myths, sagas. The musician can find the same
traces in world music, in traditional ethnical rhytms and dances, and it
proves, that the exploration of old, traditional music can lead Humanity
to new, a previously unknown path. Toys Of Ancient Gods recognized
this and bravely undertook the responsibility of showing this new path
to Humanity.
Due to the communication revolution of the 20th
century people on Earth cannot be isolated anymore, and using those channels
they can be infected by strongly manipulated trends. It means, that dance
music, wich is very popular nowadays works us a common musical language,
and it's easily comprehensible by French, Indian, Brazilian, Japanese,
American, Australian or Hungarian people (Toys Of Ancient Gods is
a Hungarian project). It is not accidental, that the creators chose this
widely open musical style as a base of their world music project. After
collecting ethnical traces and world music samples for a long time, a first
project has been made, titled "WORLD DANCE Pt. I-VIII.".
With the first album the producers encountered the first problems as well.
They asked permission to use samples not collected by them. They got all
the necessary permission, but one, and this last one cancelled the whole
project. Only a double A-sided single was released officially (Vimana/Truth
Of The Legends). The whole material of the album is spreading in uncontrollable
pirated copies in the hands of - mainly Hungarian - collectors.
After long-long and unsuccesful discussions the
creators decided to make a new album with all the new ideas since the making
of the first CD. It contains 3 cover versions from the first album (fe.:
Vimana II based on Vimana). The new collection, named "Cargo
Cult", is based entirely on legal samples and got its title from
one of the previous songs. The material follows the path pioneered by World
Dance Pt. I-VIII., but it brings some novelties: World Dance's songs made
a trip around the world in one song, but Cargo Cult's songs are staying
on a selected territory. Earlier they used more science-fiction based quotations,
but Cargo Cult uses song-titles based on Mr. von Däniken's foreign language
words instead of English titles.
The music is based mostly on the dance style using
their subordinate styles like: house, ambient-trance and dub-oriented grooves.
One of the best songs stands out from the rest.
It's a slower, Chinese "P'an Ku". Before the plans for
further Toys Of Ancient Gods releases there is a double A-side single
featuring "P'an Ku" and "Garuda"songs and their
re-mixes.
